US election campaign under attack

The campaigns of both the Republican and Democratic parties have reported attacks against their nominees. Reports from Google, Microsoft, and updates from the political parties themselves have pointed the finger at Iran and members of the Revolutionary Guard Corp.

An initial report from Microsoft's Threat Analysis Centre, last week, listed two distinct attacks that have been observed. The first was a false-information campaign to manipulate trending topics across social media; the second was a spear phishing attack with reported links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

A follow-up report from Google's Threat Analysis Group appears to corroborate the latter of the attacks detected by Microsoft. Google highlights APT42 as being responsible for the IRGC-backed phishing campaign as well as recent attacks against Israeli government targets.

Attacks, in various guises, are nothing new during election or public voting campaigns; with prominent examples from the UK's Brexit vote and the 2016/2020 US presidential elections. However, overt state-sponsored attacks such as the phishing campaign, signal a continued escalation in recent years.
